Tulipa fosteriana
‘Pirand’

These were the first tulips to bloom in the garden. They opened on a sunny day, on March the 30th. I planted them around December 20th, so quite late in the season. I had a bit of a messy planting session. I just opened up the earth, put the bulbs in and covered them back with the whole piece of soil with grass on (not unusual for bulbs who have the ability to naturalize in the grass).

Later in the season, seeing my earth all soaked up by the rain and never drying, I dug them out for fear the bulbs would rot and replaced the earth around them with a well-drained universal soil. Some bulbs that I couldn’t find on that day made it out without this extra-care. I still have no idea if this endeavour helped at all.
